STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MINUTES
JANUARY 30, 2011 ACA WINTER CONFERENCE
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

1. Meeting called to order by Eric Hoch, ACA SAC Committee Chair, at 11:30a.m.

2. Roll Call:  Eric Hoch and Rondle Anderson-Indiana;
   Jim Thomas-Northern Illinois University; 
   Patrick Perry-SUNY/Albany; 
   Jessica Zupfer, Jennifer Sain, and Anna Grant-Wisconsin Indianhead 
   Technical College;
   Kathy Murawski-ACA;
   Gloria Hultz-NAAWS; 
   Kathleen Gerbing and Sharon Benson and Robert Rock-New York;
   Amy Fellion-ACA;
   Melissa Petkovsek, Brian Schaefer, and Cassandra Atkins-Sam Houston State U.
   Paola Baldo, Amber Kamischke,  and Satya Shah-University of Ill/Chicago;
   Barbara Zaitzow-Appalachian State University;
   Richard Hart-Salvation Army/Chigago and Westwood University.

3. Approval of minutes from the August 2010 meeting at Chicago, Illinois:
    Richard Hart motioned approval.  Jim Thomas seconded.  Motion passed.

4.  Introductions:  Every one at the table presented their name and association to ACA and the SAC.

5.  Chapter Reports:  

     Eric Hoch-Bellmont High School and Ivy Tech-Terre Haute, 
Patrick Perry-SUNY/Albany, Satya Shah-University of Illinois-Chicago, and 
Barbara Zaitzow-Appalachian State University presented information of their 
student chapter.s activities and progress.

     Three applications for new chapters will be submitted later in the day 
for membership status and forwarded to the Board of Governors and then to 
the ACA General Assembly.  These three new chapters are SUNY/Albany, New York 
and Concordia University in Chicago, Illinois, and Clayton State University in 
Georgia.  (Added note 2-2-11: All three applications were approved)

     Representatives from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College brought ten students to the conference.        

6.  Information Sharing

     A. SAC Mission:

          1.  Eric reviewed the SAC committee chair and committee duties with 
          the committee.  Also discussed were the responsibilities and 
          obligation to mentor students and the mission to expand student 
          involvement.

     B.  ACA Student Poster Session:

          1.  Eric and Jim reviewed the Student Poster Session FAQs and 
          information with the committee.

          2.  Gloria announced NAAWS initiatives in supporting students at 
          ACA, including their continued generous sponsorship of the poster 
          session.  SAC thanks NAAWS for all their support.

          3.  A discussion ensued about the judges for the poster session.  
          NAAWS is willing to provide judges for the student papers.  Gloria 
          and Jim will coordinate the selection of the judges from NAAWS 
          members with both professional and academic backgrounds.  Any other 
          judges needed will be decided by Gloria and Jim.

          4.  Announcement of the August 2011 ACA Student Poster Session in 
          Kissimmee, Florida will be sent out by the end of February 2011.  
          The list will go to the ACA list serve.  Other avenues to send this 
          list to will be conducted.

7.  Old Business
     A. Student Chapter Spotlight in Corrections Today(CT)

          1. Eric/Jim will explore placing information on the student poster 
          session in the upcoming issue of CT.

          2. Jim will complete and submit the long-promised article on SAC 
          no later than end of March 2011.

     B. Recruitment of Student Chapters
          1. Eric is committed to getting three student chapters from Indiana 
          (Brown Mackie College, Ivy Tech-Bloomington, and IUPUI)

          2.  Jim will encourage at least two other schools (Western Illinois 
          and WITC) to submit their student chapter applications for the 2011 
          Summer Conference.

          3.  Strategic Plan for SAC recruitment was tabled to next meeting.  
          However, issues of updating the student chapters' website and ACA 
          website were discussed.  If any updating is needed, Eric will 
          forward the information.

8.  New Business:

    A.  NAAWS Conference in April 2011 and their main event of the Angola 
        Prison Rodeo were discussed.  If you have any interest, go to NAAWS 
        website. 
    B.  ACA Summer Conference is in Kissimmee, Florida, August 5-10, 2011.
        ACA asks for workshop proposals to be submitted ASAP.  (Added note:
        2-18-11: Jim Thomas and UIC graduate students will submit a workshop
        on "Professionals Interacting with Students:  Interns and Mentoring"
