NIU-ACA Minutes - Thursday, April 28, 2011

I. Call to Order 4:50 (by Shannon Morley, President)

II. Approval of prior minutes (not available)

III. Roll Call: Shannon Morley (President); Mary Ruth Docking
(vice-president); Sean Carlon (Treasurer-elect); Emma Booras
(secretary-elect); Michael Roehr; Courtney Hogan (president-elect);
Andre Joachim; Chris Yambor; Sam Azurela; John Han. Jim Thomas (faculty
co-advisor); Jack King (faculty co-advisor).

IV. Officer Reports:

     A. Treasurer: As of April, there is $425.50 in the account and no
outstanding debts.

     B. Faculty Adivsor: Jim summarized the trips NIU-ACA had taken in
April, including Dwight, Stateville, and Sheridan. Westville (in
Indiana) was an overnight trip in early April, and about 12 of us went
to Angola (La) for the prisoner rodeo. The students present who went
to Angola summarized their experiences.

IV. Old Business

     A. T-shirts: T-shirts will be created at Customink.  Decision not to
put their logo on the shirts for a cheaper price, since it is only a 50 cent
difference.

     B. Potluck: Motion to have a potluck at Sean's on Thursday, May 6 at
7 pm was made and seconded. Unanimous approval.

     C. Spring elections: Prior issue of moving election of NIU-ACA
officers was discussed. Key issues: Spring elections allow us to start
earlier in the fall and gives people a better chance to nominate
officers. Motion to move to elections to spring made and seconded.
Unanimous approval.

V. New Business

    A. Discussion of prisons people wanted to attend during the summer
includded IYC/St Charles and/or some other juvenile facility.

    B. Stateville was a top priority to return to; Chicago Police
Training Academy will be put on the agenda; Salvation Army Federal
Community Corrections Center for late summer/early fall. Multi-day
trips to central, southern, or western Illinois should be top priority.
DuPage County and Rockford Jails were put on the list, along with
Cook County Jail.

    C. ACA Conference in Floriday (in August) was discussed, and students
were urged to write papers and consider attending.

    D. Fall Meeting: Decision to have the first NIU-ACA meeting for fall
was urged to be no later week of September 20.
